Nick was eating his second bowl of oats when Hammer looked at him. He put the bowl down.

“Bring me the map, Nicky.”

Nick pulled the map out of his pack and hustled over—Hammer didn’t tolerate sloth. Hammer snatched it from him and spread it out on the table. He put his finger where they stood and traced the river up to the southern tip of Illinois. Fort Defiance Park.

“At least forty women are living right there according to that wagon driver.” Hammer looked at him, but Nick said nothing. “Women living behind a fence and guarded by sixty marines while working as their slaves. We can do better than that for them.”

Nick knew Hammer believed that was true because some women stayed with the crew after they ‘paid their debt’ for Hammer freeing them from their previous circumstances.

“That wagon driver was a slippery bastard so I need you to go up there and get the lowdown. How many marines there are, the security routine, etc. How many adult women. Whether they arm the damn civilians. He said there’s more than a hundred of them. After you lock all that down, I can find our way in and out.”

Shit! To do that Nick would have to get very close to the camp and very far—too far—from Hammer’s aura. “I’ll leave right away.”

“Take Dylan with you.”

Nick nodded. He’d rather go alone but Hammer didn’t send crew out alone. Dylan was okay. He didn’t have an aura, but did what he was told and was the best scrounger on the crew. You never knew when that would come in handy.

Hammer locked his gaze on Nick and held it there. Eyes boring in, reading every last thought Nick had ever had.

“You want to throw a hump into one of the women before you go?”

“I’m good.”

Hammer smiled wide. “You’re holding out for a fresh one, aren’t you? You come back with what I need and I’ll let you have second pick of the new women when we free them.”

Nick tried to smile but when he failed, Hammer smiled for him. It was the smile of a predator closing in on its prey and envisioning the kill.
